At Lanivet we want to inspire our children to develop a love for learning about the past and an interest in discovering what has shaped our world into the one we live in today. Our history curriculum will help pupils gain a coherent and chronological knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Through local case studies, we will help foster a curiosity and appreciation for the history of their local area. We aim to develop the children’s understanding of the important historical concepts of continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance. Through this understanding the children will be able to identify connections and contrasts and begin to generate and answer historically valid questions.

History at Lanivet helps pupils to gain knowledge through enquiry. Our intent is to encourage children to think increasingly in a critical way that will enable them to discuss sources of evidence and think about why interpretations of the past can be varied. Our curriculum encourages children to put their learning into a different context to help them make connections.



History is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children achieve depth in their learning. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group across the school.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) follows the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ guidance. History is taught, shared and assessed through the specific area of Understanding the World (The World and People and Communities).

Work is recorded in history/ geography books at Lanivet and can be evidenced in a range of ways including, art work, written work, photographs or diagrams. Links are also made to our ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, Healthy Planet’ ethos wherever possible. The local area is utilised to achieve and support our curriculum. Planning is informed by and aligned with the National Curriculum.

Teachers will plan the following:

  •          A leading enquiry question.
  •          A knowledge organiser which outlines knowledge (including vocabulary) all children must master.
  •          KWL grids that will be used to assess prior knowledge at the beginning of a topic then revisited for the children to add what they have learnt.
  •          A cycle of lessons which carefully plans for progression and depth and opportunities for children to develop historical enquiry skills. These lessons will lead to answering the enquiry question posed by the children.
  •          A Kahoot Quiz at the end of a topic to identify what key facts the children can recall. These are revisited post topic to assess what the children have learnt and remembered.
  •          Trips and visiting experts who will enhance the learning experience will be used and planned for.
  •          Ensure that children learn about a range of historical events and significant individuals.
  •          Links are made to other subjects to ensure depth of coverage and ability to revisit and cement understanding and learning.


Our History Curriculum is high quality, well thought out, planned to demonstrate progression and personalised to Lanivet. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods: 

  •          4 from before recap quiz given at the beginning of each lesson which will include 1 question from the previous year, 1 question from the previous term and then 2 linked to prior learning from their current topic.
  •          Pupils discussions and conferencing about their learning;
  •          Review of quizzes by the class teacher using Kahoot
  •          Children’s end products in how they communicate their learning
  •          Book Looks
